SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

Zero Plastic Rivers and the Sustainable Development Goals

Zero Plastic Rivers focuses directly at two specific Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

The first is SDG 6: Clean water and sanitation. Reducing riverine plastic pollution contributes to the improvement of the quality of water. After all, less plastic in rivers means less pollution and less toxic and harmful substances and materials in the water (SDG goals & indicators 6.3, 6.3.1 and 6.3.2).

The second is SDG 14: Life below water. Reducing riverine plastic pollution contributes to the reduction of marine plastic pollution (SDG goals & indicators 14 and 14.1). Additionally, Zero Plastic Rivers works to increase scientific knowledge, research capacity and distributing of marine technology to restore and improve the health of the oceans (SDG goals & indicators 14A and 14A.1).

Indirectly, Zero Plastic Rivers also contributes to other Sustainable Development Goals.

By doing research related to solutions to riverine plastic pollution, Zero Plastic Rivers helps to increase both the number of activities related to research & development and the technological know-how and means (SDG 9 Industry, innovation and infrastructure, SDG goals & indicators 9.5, 9.5.1 en 9.5.2)

The activities of Zero Plastic Rivers also concern SDG 11: Sustainable cities and communities which focuses on the reduction of the ecological impact of cities, with special attention for urban waste management (SDG goals & indicators 11.6 and 11.6.1).

The attention for solutions towards riverine plastic pollution also has a link to SDG 12: Responsible production and consumption. Reducing plastic pollution helps to reduce and prevent the production of waste (SDG goals & indicators 12.4, 12.4.2, 12.5 en 12.5.1).

And since the problem of riverine plastic pollution can only be solved by an effective cooperation by relevant societal actors, Zero Plastic Rivers is also active with regard to SDG 17: Partnerships for the goals. After all, Zero Plastic Rivers invests considerable time and effort to set-up and build effective and efficient partnerships with the aim to create and share knowledge, know-how, technology and financial means to realize a number of SDG's (SDG goals & indicators 17.16, 17.16.1, 17.17 en 17.17.1).

Participation in and contribution to specific initiatives

Zero Plastic Rivers supports the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals as defined by the United Nations, and also actively participates and contributes to it where possible. For this purpose, Zero Plastic Rivers participates in two specific and concrete programs at national and international level and which are embedded in a global approach based on the Sustainable Development Goals.

Locally, Zero Plastic Rivers is part of the Sustainable Development Forum. This forum gives people, organizations, companies and ngo's the possibility to register their voluntary initiatives related to the Sustainable Development Goals and situate them in the context of a wider project.

Internationally, Zero Plastic Rivers has submitted its project to the United Nations' Ocean Conference. This provides all people and organizations worldwide who work to save, restore and protect the world's oceans to situate their initiative in and align it with the actions at the level of the United Nations.

Lees verder
